Ink Painting in a Japanese Bound Book

Sunday June 23, 2024   Ink Painting in a Japanese Bound Book 9:30-12:30

We will be making a soft cover book, bound in the traditional Japanese four hole stab binding. Using a Zen inspired approach to ink painting, we will first explore what our brushes can do when we dip into water and inks which may include black India or sumi ink, walnut ink, and sepia ink. Taking a deep breath, relaxing and feeling the brush in our hands, we will begin our exploration to create botanical shapes. We will discover that we can adjust the ink color to create lighter tones of grey or brown with brush strokes that may be light or thin, then, with more pressure, become thicker and heavier. We will find where the brush wants to go on the page. Haiku or lines of poetry can be added later in the white spaces of the pages.
