Use your fingers or simple handmade tools and found objects to create surface designs with pigmented wheat paste. There are many recipes for this fun technique. The colored paste is brushed onto dampened paper, then patterns and surface designs are created. Experiment with various papers for these colorful designs and images. Paste painted papers were very popular during the 18th and early 19th century, often used as end papers or book covers. Bookbinders today still use paste papers to embellish books. Children's book illustrator Eric Carle uses paste papers to illustrate his books.
